Business 3000+ Awards 10th Anniversary Cocktail Party

A GREAT NIGHT CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

More than 130 guests gathered on 8 May at the Yarra Room of the Melbourne Town Hall to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Business 3000+ Awards Program.  Since the Awards Program commenced in 2004, 40 businesses across all industry sectors have won a Business 3000+ Award for their achievements and contribution to the City of Melbourne.

Some of the innovative small businesses who have previously won an Award include: Polaris Communications, Deck of Secrets, Keep Cup, Melbourne Rooftop Honey, Starnet Systems, STREAT, Lupe Wines, Polaris Communications, Enspire,  Doxa Youth Foundation and Intelligence Bank, just to name a few.

The evening kicked off with drinks and canapés and live music to give a festive atmosphere to the night, and had a very Melbourne buzz to it.  This was a great opportunity to mix and network with past winners, key partners, and the Melbourne business community as well as get a rare chance to chat informally to some of the dignitaries who influence some of the decision making within the business sector.

The more formal part of the evening commenced with a short address from Bruce Roberts, CEO of Crowe Horwath, a valued major sponsor of Business 3000+ Awards.  Crowe Horwath focus on SME’s and individuals, specialising in all aspects business for planning, growing and implementing business financial needs.  The majority of their clients are private and family businesses as well as some government and the Not for Profit sector.  They are ranked amongst the to 10 global accounting networks, and are known for delivering quality services in more than 100 companies.  They are proud to support Business 3000+ Awards in recognising small business in Melbourne.

The Hon. Russell Northe, Minister for Small Business spoke about the valuable contribution small business makes to Victoria.  As a former business manager Russell has a deep and abiding interest in seeing small businesses well supported as a critical part of Victoria’s economy.  As Parliamentary Secretary, Russell was actively involved in championing Small Business Victoria’s regional visits, as well as the ongoing and important role of the Small Business Mentoring Service.

Acting Lord Mayor Susan Riley from City of Melbourne spoke about the contribution of small business to the vibrancy and commercial success of the City of Melbourne as it accounts for 83% of all businesses in the municipality.  She said  “In the last six years alone our economy has grown by more than $21 billion and we’ve created over 76,000 jobs, despite being 200 times smaller than Greater Melbourne, with 40 times fewer people, and our municipality accounts for 28% of the Greater Melbourne City Council.
We have become a magnet for business:
·  There are now around 16,000 businesses up and running in the municipality We have become a magnet for people:
·  The latest figures show that our population grew by 10.5% in the last financial year.
That makes the City of Melbourne the fastest growing municipality in the country”.  Susan thanked everyone for their contribution and that the Melbourne City Council are proud to be the joint Major Sponsors of the Business 3000+ Awards Program.

Rebecca Scott, co-founder of STREAT, Social Enterprise, a previous Business 3000+ Award winner, provided insight on an innovative and dynamic way to help stop homelessness through delicious eating.  STREAT started with two small food carts in Federation Square and a class of nine trainees. STREAT has grown rapidly and now sold around 500,000 meals and coffees and provided almost 5,000 days of training and work experience to over 100 local street youth. Many have gone on to further education or found their first job. Two trainees from that first class are now fully qualified chefs in Melbourne.  This is truly inspirational story and if you need catering for your next function…give STREAT a call!

Geoff Harris, Co-founder of Flight Centre, former Vice President of Hawthorn Football Club and Philanthropist gave valuable insights on leadership for today’s business leaders.

Flight Centre began from humble beginnings with one store in the heart of Melbourne and now has 2,600 company-owned shops and business in 10 companies with 16,000 staff worldwide.  With retail statistics showing a growth in internet sales accounting for a large segment of business, it was interesting to hear that internet sales only account for 5% of Flight Centre’s sales.

What our guests said?

Lachie Pitman – Aussie Home Loans

Enjoyed the diverse range of people there and met some new and interesting people.  I got some great pointers from Geoff Harris, especially on including the staff when things are tough, Geoff said they asked the staff for their input and came up with new trading hours for the company, for example – starting shifts at 7am and working late shifts to suit their customers needs.  Great idea!”

George Bej – General Manager Marketing, The Laminex Group

“ Enjoyed the buzz of room.  Great to hear entrepreneurs talking to and encouraging small business.
Refreshing, and filled with hope and optimism, rather than the ‘shrinking to greatness’ that is unfortunately a theme some parts of corporate Australia.”

Anthony Cavanagh – CEO, Ganbina

I was able to meet like minded business people at the cocktail party, and build on the profile of my organisation at the same time…great opportunity to connect.”
